To Let you Know…..

We have been traveling, most recently to St. Louis; next, we are off to the Catholic Identity Conference in W. Virginia.  No postings will be made for some time.

I just want to mention a sign which delighted my heart as we returned home from St. Louis:  Just before crossing the Missouri/Illinois border, to my left, there was a billboard with an impressive-sized image of our Lady of Guadalupe.  The accompanying text read: “Our Lady of Guadalupe, Empress of the Americas.”   It was for me, a “thumbs up” – mission accomplished and many graces bestowed!  Deo gratias!

After Mass at the Oratory of St. Frances de Sales on Sept. 17,  I had a delightful visit with the canons, abbe, and candidates of the ICR.  They are such gentlemen and gracious hosts.

Reposting for the Birthday of Our Lady

From The life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by Msgr. R. Gentilucci

It is a common opinion that Mary was born the eighth day of the month of September, which corresponds to the beginning of the month Tisri, that is to say, the first day of the civil year of the Jews, just when the smoke of the holocaust was rising to heaven in expiation for the sins of the people.  And in this agree perfectly the Greek and Latin churches,…*Holding for certain that this “little pillar of smoke,” as Ezechiel calls it, or this “light cloud,” as Elias calls it, came to the light, in the year 3987 of the creation of the world, we shall here give some pious opinions touching this happy birth, relying upon what some of the Fathers, Greek as well as Latin, tell us.

Mary was born in autumn, when nature, more than in any other season, is wont to repay the toil of the husbandmen by giving them the ripened clusters.  “Rejoice, O earth,” says St. John Damascenus, “because from the womb of Anne, as from a fertile vine, has sprung a sweet ripe cluster.  To the harvesting of this vineyard all are invited, none is excluded, it is the joy of all.”  Mary too is born in the autumn,…because it was proper that the new Eve, the mother of the Redeemer, should change tears into joy, at the same time in the year as the first Eve had changed joy into tears.

As the beatitudes are eight in number, this eighth day of the month when she was…born, was admirably chosen, since by her was the whole world to know all beatitude, and since by her, as mother of the Redeemer, were all the elect to be ushered into the glory of heaven, there to enjoy supreme felicity.  She was born, as Luchesino remarks, on the Sabbath, the day when God rested, to show that the human race, at the glorious birth of the Virgin, was to enjoy a real repose.  Hence Saturday is a kind of festival especially consecrated to devotion to our august Lady.

As to the hour of that fortunate day which beheld the birth of Mary, St. Peter Damian believes that it was at daybreak.  Others add, that the sun that day shone with a twofold light, and that on the night preceding her birth, the moon shone with an extraordinary brilliancy, almost like that of the sun, and that for some time, far from showing usual spots, a refulgent star sparkled upon her disc.

St. John Damascenus cries joyfully:  “Yes, by Mary’s birth the human race has been restored, by it the sadness caused by Eve is changed into a perfect joy.”  St. Bernardine of Sienna,…observes joyfully, “that heaven made earth an inestimable present,” and the Abbot Rupert says:  “The nativity of the Virgin is the end of sorrow and the beginning of joy.”

+++++++++++++

*The menology of St. Basil places the birth of the Blessed Virgin on the 8th of September.  This date is also given in the menology translated into Latin by Cardinal Sorlet, and published by Henry Canisius in his Thesaurus.  The same thing is said in the edict of the Emperor Manuel Comnenus, which fixes the days for the various festivals.  In the Nomocanon of Photius (In Scholiiad ut VII.,) we read:  “Natalis itaque dies purissimae Dominae ac Dei Genitricis, qui est octavus Septembris, feriatus est.”  We find the same day set down in many other Greek authors, as well as in the Latin.

M. Voris – Watershed Moments!

Fr. J. Schweigl:  “I cannot reveal anything of what I learned at Fatima concerning the Third Secret, but I can say that it has two parts: one concerns the Pope; the other logically (although I must say nothing) would have to be the continuation of the words: “In Portugal, the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved” (The Whole Truth about Fatima, Vol. III, p. 74).

Fr. Joaquin Alonso: “In the period preceding the great triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, terrible things are to happen. These form the content of the third part of the Secret. What are they?  If “in Portugal the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved,”…it can be clearly deduced from this that in other parts of the Church these dogmas are going to become obscure or even lost altogether…. Perhaps it even refers to the failures of the upper hierarchy of the Church.”

This video is rather lengthy, but it is a must watch.  What he is saying is nothing new to me, and to fellow trads. The amazing thing is that Mr. Voris is no traditionalist. If conservatives think we trads are “nutters”, and therefore, whatever we say is not worth hearing, perhaps Mr. Voris will succeed in opening up their eyes to the worst crisis in the Church since her inception 2, 000 years ago.

Listen to him speak about his part in trying to stop Obama from being invited to Notre Dame.  There is much inside info here which has been unknown until now; things that go on behind the scenes in chanceries; the immense power Bernadine wielded.  There is a war being waged within the Church, he says.

Though Voris does not touch upon Fatima, we know about the dire situation that exists in the Church because Our Lady came to forewarn us.

Seewald Speaks on “Mystical Experience” and The Abdication

Remember when press reports of a few days ago, both church and secular, were saying that Ratzinger, Bishop emeritus of Rome, had abdicated the papal throne because of a “mystical experience” in which God told him to do so?

Well, none other than his biographer Peter Seewald is saying those reports are “stupidities and inventions”.

The following is our translation from the post at Secretum Meum Mihi:  “They are stupidities and inventions”, is what Peter Seewald, biographer of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, has said in speaking to the German agency Kath. net, in relation to a reportedly “mystical experience” which compelled the renouncement of the Petrine ministry this past February.

“I can only trust my best sources in this case.  I have recently visited Benedict XVI and we also spoke about his renouncement.  He did not express himself in any way in that direction, Seewald said to Kath.net.”

Intrigue at the Papal Conclave

Make what you will of this.  I already had, for some time now, formed my opinions. The article, published on 8/13/13, is translated from the Spanish at the InfoVaticana blog:

Extracts leaked to the press from the diary of a Cardinal in the conclave that elected Pope Benedict.

Proceedings of the conclave that changed Joseph Ratzinger into Benedict XVI, did not unfold as was thought at the time.

The main opposition to Cardinal Ratzinger was not in the Jesuit Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, but in that of another Jesuit, the Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who finally became fearful, and backed-off.  It is one of the hitherto unknown facts in the transition at the Vatican.

Limes, a prestigious Italian magazine of geopolitical information, yesterday published an unusual document: the alleged diary of a Cardinal written during the April [2005] conclave. The magazine maintained the anonymity of the cardinal’s identity for obvious reasons, but it endorsed the authenticity of the diary.  Vatican sources limited themselves to say that if the revelations were true, a serious breach of the oath of secrecy made by all participants in the conclave is surmised.

The diary recounted some anecdotes, like that of the surprise of the author in not being able to open the shutters of his room (sealed for reasons of sequestering) and outings of the Portuguese Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo out into the yard to smoke a cigar.  Of more significance, were cited the complaints raised by a group of Cardinals against a “conflict of interest” of Joseph Ratzinger, while Dean (and therefore conclave organizer) and leading contender.  It was proposed that the next dean be of more than 80 years, so he could not aspire to the papacy, but the idea did not carry through: the current dean is the Secretary of State Angelo Sodano, about to turn 79.

The gist of the document was, in any case, the narration of the primary competition that existed between Ratzinger, the powerful Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the late pope’s right hand and dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio.  On the first  “feeling out” ballot, Ratzinger won 47 votes. The runner-up was Bergoglio, a Jesuit orthodox in dogmatic issues but flexible in sexual ethics (“They want to put the world into a condom,” he joked in private), around whom, surprisingly, the entire block more or less liberal and opposed to Ratzinger, gathered.

In that first vote of April 18 in the afternoon, the leader of the reformists, Carlo Maria Martini, had nine votes.  What weighed against  Martini, former archbishop of Milan, was the state of his health:  He was suffering from incipient Parkinson’s disease, the same disease that afflicted Karol Wojtyla for years.

The goal of the anti-Ratzingers was not to win.  Cardinals, such as the Belgian Danneels or the group of  Germans (who opposed their compatriot), were aware that most members of the College of Cardinals had been appointed by John Paul II by conservative criteria, and that from that kind of electorate, there could not emerge anything reformist.  The  objective was to get a solid minority to block the German Cardinal from getting the two-thirds needed, thus persuading him to drop out in favor of a more conciliatory, alternative candidate.

The uneasiness of the Ratzingerians, who did not expect strong opposition, became visible at dinner time.  “Great concern among the Cardinals who support the election of Cardinal Ratzinger,” wrote the diarist. Bergoglio remained in silence.  The Columbian Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo tried to convince the other South Americans that they should not opt for Bergoglio because there was “no real alternative to Ratzinger”.

In the second ballot of the next morning, Ratzinger rose to 65 votes, and Bergoglio, 35. Cardinal Martini felt optimistic in seeing the evidence that Ratzinger could not garner the two-thirds needed.  On the third ballot, before lunch, Ratzinger  got 72, Bergoglio 40.  Gathered around the Argentine Cardinal, something was said which gave the appearances of a blocking minority. “Tomorrow, big news,” Martini told a colleague. He hoped that the two votes in the afternoon  would followed along the same line, and that Ratzinger would drop out that night.

The opposite happened. While Martini saw growing hopes of shutting out the Panzerkardinal, other more attentive observers perceived that, Bergoglio who, with sufficiently clear vision, made it understood that he was not prepared to continue, or, in the ultimate case, to assume the pontificate.  Bergoglio was afraid.  And that meant that, after lunch, a group of rebels decided to return to the Ratzinger camp.

In the fourth and final vote Ratzinger reached a sufficient majority, with 84 votes, and Bergoglio dropped to 26. The bad humor of some cardinals was reflected in strange votes, as that attributeCardinal Danneelsd to Bernard Law, former archbishop of Boston, who retired after the scandal of pedophile priests.  “In the Sistine there was a moment of silence followed by a long and warm applause,” says the diary. At the end of the conclave, Cardinal Danneels, the only one to publicly lament the choice of Ratzinger, now uttered a phrase that now takes on meaning: “The time to elect a HispanicAmerican  has still not arrived.”

First Sunday TLM, Rockdale, IL

Fr. Valentine, FSSP, celebrated the apostolate’s first Sunday TLM at its new location in Rockdale, IL, in the church of St. Joseph, diocese of Joliet.  Father has been appointed administrator of this mixed parish.  Undoubtedly, the arrival of a Latin Mass community has been disconcerting to existing parishioners, but given time, they will come to see and appreciate the tremendous blessing God has bestowed on them.

The Sunday bulletin had this insertion:

“What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful.. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.”                                                                                          – Letter to bishops, Pope Benedict XII, July 7, 2007

Update; First Class Relics of Blessed José Sánchez del Rio

Two things we would like to bring to your attention:

1.)  We are updating our page  “A BEAUTIFUL WAY OF UNDERSTANDING THE TLM”.  Almost half of the entries have been revised.  We will eventually get to all of them to improve and expand content.  Please note that there is now a Facebook page, where the posts are being uploaded.

2.)  First class relics – bone fragment of a finger – of Blessed  José Sánchez del Rio are now available, although it might take a miracle for you to obtain one.   Since I very much want one, I tried communicating with the parish church, but they do not answer.  But I pass on to all of you the information I have obtained.  It won’t be easy, but it might be worth a try: a.)  Write in Spanish; b.)  *[See note below] Have your pastor submit a written request. c.)  The parish is asking for a donation of $900 pesos, plus costs for shipping. (I looked up the exchange rates, and found that the amount would be approximately $71 dollars.  The reliquary is Italian, and apparently well-made.)

Here is a link to the FB page for the parish of Santiago Apostol in Sahuayo, custodian of the relics of Blessed  José Sánchez del Rio. I have tried communication via the site, but I get no answer there either.  Perhaps mañana’!  🙂  In Mexico, things have a way of proceeding at a snail’s pace.

* NOTICE of August 9, 2013:  I have just read on FB, that the relics are meant only for parishes!

The address:

Parroquia Santiago Apostol

Calle Morelos e Insurgentes, Col. Michoacan
